Grade 4 - Afrikaans

Afrikaans as Eerste Addisionele Taal gaan van die standpunt uit dat leerders nie noodwendig enige kennis van die taal het wanneer hulle begin skoolgaan nie. Die kurrikulum het ten doel om die leerder se vermoë om die taal te praat en te verstaan, te ontwikkel – basiese interpersoonlike kommunikasievaardighede.

Afrikaans as First Additional Language assumes that learners do not necessarily have any knowledge of the language when they arrive at school. The curriculum focusses on developing learners’ ability to understand and speak the language – basic interpersonal communication skills.

Grade 4 - English

Language is a tool for thought and communication. It is also a cultural and aesthetic means commonly shared among a people to make better sense of the world they live in.

The Home Language level provides for language proficiency that reflects the basic interpersonal communication skills required in social situations and the cognitive academic skills essential for learning across the curriculum. The emphasis and the weighting in the Foundation and Intermediate phases is on listening and speaking skills, with a gradual increase in the focus on reading and writing skills as the learners advance in their school careers.

Grade 4 - Life Skills

Life Skills deals with the holistic development of the learner throughout childhood. It equips learners with knowledge, skills and values that assist them to achieve their full physical, intellectual, personal, emotional and social potential. It does this by developing three different, but interrelated study areas, namely Personal and Social Well-being, Physical Education and Creative Arts.

Grade 4 - Mathematics

Mathematics helps to develop mental processes that enhance logical and critical thinking, accuracy and problem-solving that will contribute in decision-making.

Mathematics aims to develop:
  • confidence and competence to deal with any mathematical situation without being hindered by a fear of Mathematics
  • an appreciation for the beauty and elegance of Mathematics
  • a spirit of curiosity and a love for Mathematics

Grade 4 - Natural Sciences & Technology

Science is a systematic way of looking for explanations and connecting the ideas we have.

With Technology people use the combination of knowledge, skills and available resources to develop solutions that meet their daily needs and wants.

Science and Technology encourages activities that
  • sustain enjoyment and curiosity about the world and natural phenomena
  • foster awareness of the contribution of Science and Technology to social justice and societal development
  • emphasise the need for using scientific and technological knowledge responsibly, and
  • help learners understand the practical and ethical consequences of decisions based on Science and Technology.

Grade 4 - Sesotho

Kgato ya Puo ya Tlatsetso ya Pele e dumela hore ha se hakaalo hore baithuti ba na le tsebo ya puo ha ba fihla sekolong. Dilemong tse mmalwa tse qalang tsa sekolo, di shebana le ho bopa bokgoni ba moithuti ba ho utlwisisa le ho bua puo - bokgoni ba motheo ba ho ikgokahanya le batho ba bang. Dikereiteng tsa 2 le 3 baithuti ba qala ho bopa litheresi motheong ona wa ho bua. Ba boetse ba kenya tshebetsong bokgoni ba litheresi boo ba seng ba ithutile bona Puong ya bona ya Lapeng.

The First Additional Language level assumes that learners do not necessarily have any knowledge of the language when they arrive at school. The focus in the first few years of school is on developing learners’ ability to understand and speak the language – basic interpersonal communication skills. In Grades 2 and 3 learners start to build literacy on this oral foundation. They also apply the literacy skills they have already learned in their Home Language.

Grade 4 - Social Sciences

The subject Social Sciences consists of History and Geography.

Social Sciences aims to provide opportunities for learners to look at their own worlds with fresh, critical eyes, and perhaps more importantly, it aims to introduce learners to a world beyond their everyday realities.
