Grade 9 - Afrikaans

Afrikaans as Eerste Addisionele Taal gaan van die standpunt uit dat leerders nie noodwendig enige kennis van die taal het wanneer hulle begin skoolgaan nie. In die Senior Fase probeer ons on om leerders wat steeds nie goed is in hul addisionele taal te ondersteun en om terselfdertyd ʼn kurrikulum te voorsien wat leerders in staat stel om aan die vereiste standaard van die volgende Fase te voldoen.

Afrikaans as First Additional Language assumes that learners do not necessarily have any knowledge of the language when they arrive at school. The Senior Phase tries to support learners who still cannot communicate well in their additional language while at the same time provide a curriculum that enables learners to meet the standards required in further grades.

Grade 9 - Creative Arts

Creative Arts provides exposure to and study of a range of art forms including dance, drama, music and visual arts (including design and crafts). The main purpose of the subject Creative Arts is to develop learners as creative, imaginative individuals who appreciate the arts and who have the basic knowledge and skills to participate in arts activities and to prepare them for possible further study in the art forms of their choice in Further Education and Training (FET).

Grade 9 - Economic & Management Sciences

Economic and Management Sciences deals with the efficient and effective use of different types of private, public or collective resources to satisfy people’s needs and wants. It reflects critically on the impact of resource exploitation on the environment and on people. It also deals with effective management of scarce resources in order to maximise profit.

Economic and Management Sciences is a practical subject that equips learners with real-life skills for personal development and the development of the community. The tasks set should contribute to personal development and should promote the idea of sustainable economic growth and the development of the community.

Grade 9 - English

Language is a tool for thought and communication. It is also a cultural and aesthetic means commonly shared among a people to make better sense of the world they live in.

The Home Language level provides for language proficiency that reflects the basic interpersonal communication skills required in social situations and the cognitive academic skills essential for learning across the curriculum. The emphasis and the weighting from Grades 7 onwards reflect the increasing importance of reading and writing skills as the learners advance in their school careers.

Grade 9 - Life Orientation

Life Orientation promotes self-motivation and teaches learners how to apply goal-setting, problem-solving and decision-making strategies. Learners are guided to develop their full potential and are provided with opportunities to make informed choices regarding personal and environmental health, study opportunities and future careers.

Life Orientation helps learners to develop beneficial social interactions, such as respecting others’ rights and values and promotes lifelong participation in recreation and physical activity.

Grade 9 - Mathematics

Mathematics helps to develop mental processes that enhance logical and critical thinking, accuracy and problem-solving that will contribute in decision-making.

Mathematics aims to develop:
  • confidence and competence to deal with any mathematical situation without being hindered by a fear of Mathematics
  • an appreciation for the beauty and elegance of Mathematics
  • a spirit of curiosity and a love for Mathematics

Grade 9 - Natural Sciences

Science is a systematic way of looking for explanations and connecting the ideas we have.

Natural Sciences lays the basis of further studies in more specific Science disciplines, such as Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences or Agricultural Sciences. It prepares learners for active participation in a democratic society that values human rights and promotes responsibility towards the environment. Natural Sciences can also prepare learners for economic activity and self-expression.

Grade 9 - Social Sciences

The subject Social Sciences consists of History and Geography.

Social Sciences aims to provide opportunities for learners to look at their own worlds with fresh, critical eyes, and perhaps more importantly, it aims to introduce learners to a world beyond their everyday realities.

Grade 9 - Technology

Technology stimulates learners to be innovative and develops their creative and critical thinking skills. It teaches them to manage time and material resources effectively, provides opportunities for collaborative learning and nurtures teamwork. These skills provide a solid foundation for several FET subjects as well as for the world of work.

The use of knowledge, skills, values and resources to meet people’s needs and wants by developing practical solutions to problems, taking social and environmental factors into consideration.

Grade 9 - Computer Literacy

Computer Literacy aims to build basic computer skills and practical knowledge that will help learners make effective use of Information and Communications Technologies. This will assist them in their schoolwork and adult careers as they learn to research, prepare and present materials in assignments, as well as the basic physical keyboarding skills that enables them to do this in an efficient manner.

Computer Literacy also provides an introduction to the FET band subjects Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and Information Technology (IT).
